Goose Spit to Little Mexico

Goose Spit

With warmer weather rolling in quickly, the time is right to grab that paddle board and head out to one of the many paddling locations we're luckly to have in the Comox Valley.

One of my personal favorite paddle locations to depart from is Goose Spit in Comox.  With options to paddle on both sides of the Spit, a favorite route is to put in on the inside (protected side) of Goose Spit and follow the bay around past the navy base and out to what the locals refer to as "little mexico".  With one of the sandiest beaches in the area, little mexico is a great spot to paddle to where you can play in the sand, soak up the sun, and watch the fishing boats and sail boats pass all day under the watchful eye of the Comox Glacier.

When you're heading out for a paddle, keep an eye on the tide charts.  If you time it right you can use the tide going out to help pull you to little mexico, and a rising tide will help push you pack to the spit.  But if you get the timing wrong, you'll have a bit of a workout to fight the current!

For updated tide information and to check the live video feed, try using Big Wave Dave's website.  There you can find great tide information, wind projections, and live web cams from around the island.

And for anyone looking to try paddling or needing to up grade their gear, head down to Coast Surf Shop on Comox Ave in Comox.  You'll find knowledgable staff and a great selection of boards, paddles, and clothing to get you on the water asap!

See you on the water!
